Pioneer Mormon Wagon Train

Story Behind the Art

The heroic Mormon pioneers traveled west in their covered wagons. Eric Dowdle has captured the strength and courage of the pioneers in 1847 as modern 1997 day pioneers re enact the same arduous journey west for the sesquicentennial celebration. In a letter to those participating in the trek, President Bill Clinton stated it best “The story of the Mormon pioneers is in many ways the story of America. It is the story of everyone who has ever traveled to our shores seeking freedom to worship according to the dictates of their own conscience. And it is the story of a people who know that, with hard work and faith in God, they can accomplish anything.”
