Feed Them

He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? - Mark 6:37

 Story Behind the Art:

Jesus, who had gone to a deserted place with his apostles, was suddenly surrounded by a multitude. When Jesus saw them, he was moved to compassion and began to teach them.  But as the time passed, there was no near place to get food to feed them. When the Lord was approached by the concerned apostles He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat.

In the painting the viewer can almost visualized the dialog between the Lord and the apostles. The disciples bring their impotence to Jesus, but the Lord, instead of fixing the problem himself tells them “Give ye them to eat”.  At the moment this command must have felt like a very heavy burden to the apostles, but the teaching here is that through the Lord we can all give much more than what we think we are capable of, and this not only in reference to giving physical nourishment but also to nourish the spiritual ailment.
