And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.- Luke 22:43 - 44
Story Behind the Art:
Christ’s time in Gethsemane was a prelude to his Atonement. Events transpired that we can not understand. It is the most significant event in history. I wanted to capture the moment of pain and struggle. As an angel appeared to strengthen the greatest of us all. “...in agony he prayed more earnestly” has become a special phrase to me, that the Savior could be an example to us all, that when we are in agony, we need to pray more earnestly for strength. Though I didn’t show the great drops of blood which accompanied this event, I did add a few subtle drops to his forehead, as if the struggle that caused his blood vessels to burst was just beginning. I wanted this painting to be gritty and rough to symbolize the emotion. - Chad Winks
