"Prepare to cross the stormy main; And with the faithful make a start.
To cross the plains with your handcart.  For some must push and some must pull, As we go marching up the hill.  So merrily on the way we go, Until we reach the Valley, Oh!"   (Excerpt from "The Handcart Song" written by John D. McAllister in 1851)

Story Behind the Art:

The Martin Company was the fifth and final company to leave Britain's shores that year.  They left Liverpool, England on the morning of May 22, 1856 with 575 Latter-Day Saints on the ship "Horizon".   Little did this body of Saints realize what they were about to experience ... and the kind of legacy they would leave for the rest of us.
